The life of the Hijra & Transgender in India is a fight for change and to get the laws right.

I am captivated by the beauty, culture & art of India.

However, recently I read an article on the Culture Trip-Unique, about the hijra of India.

I was curious to learn more about the culture of the group known as Hijras. So, I read from various sources, & now I share with my readers.

India’s Law:

Indian law recognizes transgender people, including Hijras, as a third gender.

Other South Asian countries, such as Bangladesh and Pakistan, have recognized only Hijras as the third gender.

India’s trans women community, or Hijra, has been a part of the subcontinent for about as long as civilization has.

But the larger LGBT community faces severe legal disadvantages since same-sex sexual relations are illegal in the country.

The transgender community comprises Hijras, eunuchs, Kothi, Aravani, Shiv-Shakti, etc.

Eunuchs have existed since the 9th century BC.
