The Truth About The First Chocolate Ice Cream Bar!
An Invention Of A Century Ago.
In 1922, a high school boy, Douglas Ressenden, was undecided about buying a candy bar or an ice cream bar because he was short of money to buy both. The storekeeper, Kent Nelson, came up with the thought of combining the candy with the ice cream.
Kent struggled to find a chocolate that would stick to ice cream. Finally, he found a candy supplier who advised him to use cocoa butter over the candy bar, and it worked!
Nelson coated the ice cream bars in the unique chocolate mix, added a stick to hold the treat, and named it “I-Scream Bars.”
Success! The product was a popular seller. So Kent partnered with Russell Stover, of candy fame & Graham Ice Cream Company, and the product got a patent.
Stover’s wife introduced the stickless Eskimo Pie, wrapped in foil. The company made impressive profits as folks loved the treats.
1923, because of legal problems, Stover sold his share, and in 1924 Nelson sold the company to the U.S. Foil, now Reynolds Metals company.
The public continues to enjoy chocolate-covered ice cream bars in many flavors.
