20-year-old Maribel was born in Honduras. In the year 1988, she came to the US as an exchange student. She enrolled in the Physical Therapy degree program at Texas Tech University. She was intelligent and ambitious. Her parents are professional teachers. Her family has high expectations from their only daughter.

The first year was exciting. Maribel was meeting many new friends from different countries and the US. She was popular and pretty. She loved to play Volleyball and go out dancing on weekends. She became Gary’s partner for the dance and later was known to be his date.

In her second year at Tech, Maribel is pregnant. She is 3 months along and finally tells Gary. Anxiety, fear, and concern grip the lovers. Gary encourages her to have it terminated. He is not ready to be a father. He knows his parents will disown him. His parents are against mixed-race persons anyway. They would never accept this Hispanic girl. This was his biggest concern. ‘This baby must not happen’.

The plan was to get an appointment at Planned Parenthood Clinic for the procedure. They will need $1,300. Maribel calls on her grandmother for a loan. She cannot ask her parents as she does not want them to find out. Gary has no means to get funds.

It is six weeks later that Maribel receives the money from her grandma via Western Union. 5 days later the couple present for their appointment at the clinic and pay the deposit for the Ultrasound and…
