A human emotion.

The toddler & his Mom — author’s photo

The young mother tripped, falling over her toddler’s toys that were on the floor. The little guy ran to help his Mom up & on the couch. Then, talking baby-talk & touching her face with his little hands — he kissed her on the cheek. That was so sweet it brought tears to my eyes.

I believe the sudden burst of sweetness & showing genuine empathy from a 17-month-old toddler is the foundation that he will grow up to be a compassionate adult.

Cultivating empathy should be nurtured throughout a child’s life. Compassion is at the heart of what it means to be human. It is a foundation for acting ethically, for good relationships, and according to Harvard resources, it is a key to preventing bullying and other forms of cruelty in later life.

These parents are wholeheartedly involved in securing empathy & concern for others in their child.
