Solon-The Learned Wise Man From Athens in Greece.
He was A lawmaker.
We have a new Pastor at our church. He tells a story from the Greek historian Herodotus;
In the years 560–546 B.C. Croesus, the King of Lydia in Asia Minor, was a ruler and the richest man in the world. King Croesus had everything to make him happy, lands, houses, slaves, & all the fine things in life. So he was content & comfortable, and he said, “I am the happiest man in the world.”
One summer, a great man from Athens by the name of Solon was traveling in Asia. Solon was known for his wisdom, and long after his death, the highest praise given to a wise man was to say — “He is as wise as Solon.”
Solon went to visit Croesus at his palace. Croesus was proud & happy because the wisest man in the world was his guest. So he led Salon throughout his grand palace and gardens.
In the evening, the wisest & richest men dined together. Then the king said to his guest, ‘Tell me, O Solon, who do you think is the happiest of all men?”
After a moment, Solon said, “There is a poor man who lives in Athens by the name of Tellus; he is the happiest of all men. He was an honest man who labored hard to bring up his children and give them a good education. And when the children were able to care for themselves, Tellus…
