Loss of a Pregnancy is devastating to a family. The Mom is inconsolable for months.
Monitoring the progress of pregnancy in Women’s Health Care is exciting and rewarding. At each prenatal visit, there is a joy for a positive assessment of the baby’s growth. The pleasant sound of the heartbeat of the baby is a happy experience for both Mom & Dad. They are enthusiastic during the childbirth classes. There is so much to discuss, prepare, so many questions, especially if it is the first baby.
Pleasant interactions occur when all goes well with the pregnancy.
Misfortune occasionally occurs in first pregnancies. For various reasons, the pregnancy is at risk. Signs of fetal loss is evident — the prescription of different protocols arises in an attempt to thwart that which seems inevitable.
A fetal loss at any stage of the pregnancy is a devastation to the couple.
The question of “Why me, why my baby.” is pitiful to hear. No response is acceptable.
It is painful to observe the couple holding, talking to the little body, taking the footprints, placing cute clothes on the limp body as if not accepting the reality of what took place.
During the postpartum period, emotions range from feelings of guilt or wrongdoing, “It is my fault. I must have done something wrong.”
