I am inspired by the hospitality of the Malaysian families in Cape Town.

Is this welcoming kindness hereditary?

An invitation to dinner at their home is fit for royalty! Authentic Malay cooking is the best in the world, in my opinion.

I am curious about their ancestry and how these folks arrived in South Africa from Indonesia.

The Cape Malays are the only cultural group of their kind globally. Most of their ancestors were slaves, political prisoners or exiles from the Dutch East India Company. They arrived in South Africa in the 16th century onboard ships.

In 1619 the Founding of Batavia led to the establishment of a Dutch Colony. Batavia became the center of the Dutch East India Company, a trading network in Asia.

Historical evidence reveals that their ancestors were not all slaves and ordinary political prisoners.

Numerous were highly educated Indonesian nobles, Princes, and key spiritual figures, who brought Islam to South Africa.

In 1697, the Rajah of Tambora was exiled to the Cape South Africa by the Government of Batavia for fighting the Dutch. It is said that he transcribed the Koran from memory and translated it…
