At 11.30 pm on July 15th, 1998, there was a knock at our front door.

With his Magnum in his robe pocket, my husband proceeded to the front door & called out, “Who’s there?”

My son was outside and said, “It is Joseph, your son Dad- please let me in.” My husband quickly unlocked the door and let my son in, locking the door again. Joseph came in, carrying a small suitcase.

I donned my robe and proceeded to the Den, where Joseph sat on the sofa. My husband was fixing a cup of tea for our son, who seemed troubled.

“Tell your mother what’s going on,” my husband Abraham told my son.

Joseph, our 21 years old, tells us that he can no longer live with the 20-year-old girl, Michelle. They had been married for seven months & lived in another city where Joseph had a job.

He said Michelle has no clue about housekeeping, cooking, or cleanliness. Suppose she bathed twice a week; that was a lot. She has terrible body odor, and he has not slept with her for the past five months. He could not stand it any longer, and he is begging to use his old room until he can get out of this mess.

“Did you not know this before you married her? You did not even tell us about the sudden marriage to someone we never met”.

He proceeded to tell us that he met Michelle at church, and she latched onto him because she knew he was making good money with the oil company.

When Michelle’s grandfather found out about the new boyfriend, he told Joseph that he would shoot him if he does not marry her. Within two weeks of the relationship, they were married in court. The grandfather was the witness.

Joseph found out later from the folks at the church that Michelle’s family wanted her out of the house.

She was lazy and refused to find a job. She stole money and jewelry from her family and sold it to buy makeup and clothes.

Big question! “is she pregnant?” I asked. “No, Mom, I told you I could not sleep with her. Just yesterday, her bloody panties lay on the laundry pile.”

I praised God silently. Now, what are we going to do to help our son? We had never even met his wife.
