Mr. Harrel visited the two high school boys, Andrew and Adrian, to inform them of the cancellation of the rehearsal. They are the best men for their teacher's upcoming wedding. The church building has extensive damage from the hailstorm. There will be no services until they complete repairs.

The teens' mother invites Mr. Harrel for a cup of coffee & a chat.

"I am curious to know how such heavy, citrus size hailstones remain in the clouds & what makes them fall to earth, creating so much damage," she asks.

"I know the answer, Mom! We learned it at Physical Science class," is Andrew’s response, and he explains as follows;

The Science of Hail Formation;

Hailstones form when thunderstorm updrafts carry raindrops upwards into extremely cold areas of the atmosphere, where they freeze. Hailstones then grow by colliding with water drops that freeze onto the hailstones surface. The hail falls to earth when the thunderstorm’s updraft can no longer support the weight of the hailstone and when the updraft weakens.
