Cardamom-for Fine Dining Lovers.
It is an aromatic culinary herb.
Cardamom is my favorite cooking spice.
History:
Its history dates back at least 4000 years. The ancient Greeks used the herb since the Bronze Age Kingdom of Mycenae. Romans chewed the pods, and the ancient Greeks and Egyptians used cardamom in perfumes & chewed the seeds as a tooth cleanser.
Origin:
The spice is native to the East, originating in the forests of the western ghats in southern India, where it grows wild. The Vikings found cardamom one thousand years ago in Constantinople and introduced it into Scandinavia. It also grows in Sri Lanka, Guatemala, Indochina, & Tanzania.
Price:
Cardamom is an expensive spice, and they often adulterate it with inferior substitutes of cardamom-related plants. They call true cardamom Elettaria Cardamomum. Cardamom comes from the seeds of a ginger-like plant. The aromatic odor is warm & pungent. The flavor is warm eucalyptus-like with camphor-like & lemony undertones. The texture of the pod is like tough paper.
The use of cardamom:
In baking Scandinavian style cakes & pastries.
We include cardamom in curries, meat…
