Prisons in Japan are safe but harsh.

With the deaths and injuries of inmates in 2002 and 2003 in Nagoya prison, the problems in the correctional administration became apparent. As a result, the Correctional Administration Reform Council revised the Prison Act, creating significant reforms to the treatment of inmates.

The Correction Bureau of the Ministry of Justice operates the Penal system in Japan. The Criminal Justice System of Japan intends to resocialize, reform, and rehabilitate offenders!

In many ways, the prison system of Japan is impressive! Overcrowding is not an issue. Assaults or rapes among prisoners are rare. Drugs & weapons are primarily non-existent within prison walls.

Japan has a small proportion of its population in prison.

Authorities classify prisoners according to gender, nationality, type of penalty, length of sentence, degree of criminality, and the state of physical & mental health of the individual.

The inmates are then placed in special programs to treat their individual needs.

There are 62 adult prisons. Six jails are for juveniles, 52 juvenile training schools, eight detention houses, and 100 are branch detention houses. In addition…
