The Red Crab Migration.

Christmas Island or Kiritimati is a Pacific Ocean atoll. It lies1500 km west of the Australian mainland and 2600 km from Perth.

Its nickname is the ‘Galápagos of the Indian Ocean,’ famous for its red crabs, seabirds, whale sharks, and spectacular coral reefs!

So what has this to do with the kindhearted Australians?

Here is the story of a generous people;

Every year 100 million crabs migrate from Christmas Island forests to the sea for breeding and spawning.

However, the road in the center of their path puts them at risk of being crushed by traffic.

In an attempt to save the lives of the crustaceans, the Australian authorities built bridges & tunnels along the full extent of that highway!

Furthermore, to protect the red crabs, some road sections may close for part or all of the day during peak migration of the crabs.
