Society consciousness:

In 2006 Sampat Pal Devi founded the Gulabi gang in response to the lack of police support for victims of domestic abuse.

Most of the members are of the lower castes, living in India’s impoverished region, where a lack of education also exists.

The gang fight for the rights of women regardless of their castes.

There are a few men who stand in solidarity against issues like government corruption, child marriages & dowry deaths.

Despite the law enacting 33% of parliamentary seats for women, the Gulabi Gang continue to operate since they believe even female politicians can be corrupt.

The Gulabi prefer vigilante justice instead of working with politicians. They like to work on their own rather than with government organizations.

Who are these ladies?

Some members are agricultural workers. Others are self-employed in jobs set up by self-help groups, like sewing, growing & selling vegetables, or trading other commodities.

Al Jazeera news reports that there are 400,000 members.
