A tragedy in New Zealand!
Death of the blue penguins.
Ornithologists were baffled when the bodies of over 1,000 little blue penguins washed ashore on New Zealand’s North Island beaches.
The tragedy started at the beginning of May 2022.
The scientists discovered that the penguins died from starvation.
Climate change causes rising ocean temperatures, and their food sources flee to cooler waters leaving the birds with nothing to eat.
The earth’s oceans absorb more than 90% of the excess heat in the atmosphere. As a result, the waters in New Zealand have been the warmest in recorded history for the past six years!
In addition, the extended La Niña weather conditions, and harsh onshore winds, left the little blue penguins struggling to feed, nest, and breed.
Today, the Department of conservation reveals that around 200 dead penguins are washing up on area beaches daily.
The little blue penguin, known as the kororā in the Māori language, is a tiny bird that we find in New Zealand & on the southern coast of Australia.
